Cultivating Mental Strength in Athletes: Guidance for Parents and Coaches

In the aftermath of a game, parents often find themselves eager to dissect the performance with their athlete. However, it's crucial to heed the wisdom of the "30-minute rule." This rule suggests refraining from discussing the game for at least half an hour, allowing the athlete time to process the experience independently. By respecting this buffer period, parents create space for their child to reflect and strategize internally, fostering self-reliance and mental resilience. It's during this introspective phase that many athletes formulate their own game plans for improvement, demonstrating remarkable maturity and self-awareness.

Equally essential in this process is the role of coaches. Post-game discussions led by coaches should prioritize positivity and brevity. While it's important to address areas needing improvement, focusing primarily on the team's strengths and successes contributes to a constructive and encouraging atmosphere. By delivering concise feedback and sending players home to decompress, coaches promote mental well-being and readiness for future challenges. This approach not only enhances athletic performance but also cultivates a supportive team culture built on mutual respect and growth.

Together, parents and coaches play pivotal roles in nurturing the mental fortitude of young athletes. By adhering to principles of patience, positivity, and constructive communication, they create an environment conducive to both personal growth and athletic achievement. Let's empower our athletes to navigate the complexities of competition with confidence, resilience, and a deep-seated belief in their own capabilities.

Athletes and Mental Health: The Hidden Opponent | Victoria Garrick | TEDxUSC

The issue of mental health in college students, specifically college student-athletes, is stigmatized and neglected. According to a 2011 study by the National College Athletic Association, 30% of about 200,000 student-athletes reported feeling depressed. 50% also claimed to have experienced overwhelming anxiety, and this information is six years out of date. Student-athletes are typically praised as celebrities on campus, considered strong and brave. When we walk by and people cheer, “Great win last night,” they can’t see that we are struggling with issues incurable by their praise and affirmation. We minimize the effects of our depression, anxiety, or eating disorder, because society does not encourage us to come forward. Student-athletes endure five hours of team commitment daily, 18 hours of class weekly, and the pressure to physically perform no matter what the circumstance. You can’t see mental health issues like you can see an ankle sprain. From Atherton, California, Victoria Garrick is a rising Junior libero for the USC Women’s Indoor Volleyball team. Both freshman and sophomore year, Victoria started and played in every match for the Women of Troy, who won the Pac-12 Championship in 2015. During a difficult freshman year, learning how to be a Division I athlete as well a Dean’s List student, she dealt with situational depression, anxiety, and a binge-eating disorder. By seeing a sports psychologist at USC every week, Victoria was able to learn how to manage her mental health issues, as well as regain normal eating habits. However, she is very concerned about other athletes like her who do not have the confidence to seek help, or learn how to manage their chaotic lives. One of Victoria’s missions in her final two years of college is to help others by sharing her experience. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Drew Robinson on Mental Health, Perfectionism & Balance | Major League Baseball [ MLB ]

Former Major Leaguer turned Mental Health advocate, Drew Robinson, joins us today on the podcast. It is heavy. It is inspiring. It is real. Drew’s well documented failed suicide attempt has been the subject of discussion around ENDING THE STIGMA as it relates to mental health. Born and raised in Las Vegas, NV, Drew signed his first professional player contract with the Texas Rangers out of high school and went on to play parts of 12 seasons with Rangers, Cardinals and Giants organizations while spending parts of 3 seasons at the major league level with the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals. In February of 2020, he and ESPN released an E60 documentary on his survived suicide attempt in hopes to create awareness on mental health and end the stigma surrounding it. After losing his right eye in his attempt and eventually completing a comeback to professional baseball, Drew retired after the 2021 season and will be entering his first year under the baseball operations side of the San Francisco Giants organization assisting Dr. Shana Alexander and Dr. Emily Cheatum in the mental health & wellness department. He will be in charge of creating a Peer Support Program throughout the organization to help players & staff feel more comfortable starting their own conversations regarding their mental and emotional wellbeing.
